SSL( Secure Sockets Layer) Certificate

SSL Certificate Overview

SSL( Secure Sockets Layer) is one of the security measures used to provide optimal protection to the website by encrypting the communications between the visitor/client (browser) and server. It ensures secure transmission of sensitive information. SSL Connections are essential for any website.

Information privacy is essential and SSL prevent the info from being accessed by hackers or unauthorised users. It is considered as a security seal. To enable this, a server requires an installation of SSL Certificate, dedicated IP address and clients/ visitors need a modern web browser.

Need of SSL Certificate

There are two main reasons behind the need of SSL Certificate by any hosting company. First companies accept payments via credit card on their website. Second reason is to keep the confidential information secure at the time of its access via web. It also offers protection to user passwords from being intercepted.

A safe and secure way is created by an SSL through which confidential information including credit card no., usernames, passwords and other relevant info, which if accessed by hackers, results in severe losses, can pass properly and safely.

Implementation

When a visitor visit SSL protected website, an encrypted connection is created on automated basis by SSL with the visitor or client browser. When a connection is done, a padlock icon and https:// prefix is displayed in URL address by their browser bar. If EV Certificate is used, status bar also turns green. Now clients are safe, they can enter their sensitive information to the website. A seal can be added to the website so that visitors can know that site they are visiting is safe and secure. If users want to see the status and other details of SSL Certificate, they need to click on the seal. Now information passing through a website is scrambled with encryption which cannot be break by the hackers. This is how SSL works.

Mainly there are two types of SSL Certificates. First Standard SSL Certificate which we discussed above and second is Premium SSL Certificate. In the latter case, a green browser is displayed which is a sign of a reliable organization that its physical and legal existence is verified and following the industry standards. Standard SSL is recommended for personal websites and Premium or Standard is recommended for business websites. These certificates need to be renewed from time to time as a particular duration is decided by a web host for using them.

Conclusion

To conclude, SSL Certificates are must for personal as well as business sites as information of any kind must be transmitted in a safe and secure manner between the client (browser) and server.
