How Voice Technology Is Reshaping Businesses

2020-04-07by Milica Kostic

Voice technology has been around for a while now. That said, it’s only in the last few years that we’ve seen it come into its own. Once plagued by glitchy performance, technological advances and artificial intelligence have made voice tech indispensable.

Around 40% of adults globally already use this technology. It’s changed the way we live our lives and how we run our businesses.

In this post, we’ll look at the impact that voice technology and AI have on businesses in general and hosting in particular.

How Hosting is Changing Thanks to These Technologies

A server is a server, you might think. What could voice tech or AI possibly add to the mix? You’d be surprised. Voice tech doesn’t come into the equation much here. AI, on the other hand, is particularly important.

AI can improve the web hosting industry by:

  • Managing traffic better. AI can constantly monitor the host’s network, reallocating resources as necessary to ensure better traffic management.

  • Improving security for hosting companies and clients. DDoS attacks are particularly damaging to businesses. AI can identify and halt these attacks by identifying troublesome traffic patterns.

  • Repairing issues within the network.AI can consistently monitor hosting systems to diagnose errors. Where possible, AI will fix those errors. Where not, it could alert network technicians to the fault.

  • Domain security. One of the big issues with running a successful network today is that people may try to emulate your performance. This might mean directly copying from the site. AI could find instances of this, even where they’ve spun the content and alert the site owner.

Voice tech could be useful in improving customer service. Let’s have a look at its general impact on business.

They Put the Chat Back into Chatbots

Every time you ask your virtual assistant to do anything, you’re dealing with a chatbot. Now, granted, these applications take chatbot technology to the next level. At heart, though, they’re chatbots that use voice technology.

They do this in two ways:

  • Voice-activated tech

  • Vocal responses.

Seamless Experiences for Users

Does anybody still remember when DOS was the new kid on the block? Back in those ancient times, you had to type the correct command into your computer to get it to run. If you didn’t know the exact term, you couldn’t operate the program.

Today, things are made easier through the use of voice technology and AI together. AI makes it possible for our devices to understand the context of our commands. This, in turn, means that it doesn’t matter as much as which command you use.

As long as you’re in the right general vicinity, your device will still understand you. This makes it easy for businesses to provide a seamless experience across different consumer devices. It won’t matter if they use their tablet, laptop, or phone, they’ll find commands easy.

Changing How We Search the Internet

Any business on the web faces a battle for traffic. Voice search may, at first, seem to have made SEO harder. With the incorporation of natural language and contextual searches, it does seem harder. On the upside, though, natural language can work in your favor as a local business.

Drop-in some questions that people would typically ask, use local references and phrases, and it’s simpler to rank locally. If you’re a foot-through-the-door business, ranking highly in local searches is more critical than in general searches.

Even if you don’t want to rank locally, voice tech has changed how we search the internet. With the incorporation of AI, voice searches have become a lot more efficient. You now not only get the results that best match your words but also the context of your search.

New Possibilities for the Internet of Things

Voice search also makes it easier to use and control the Internet of Things. Imagine driving your smart car and having to fiddle with buttons to change settings. With voice tech, you don’t have to take your eyes off the road to do this.

This will be helpful with other IoT-connected devices. Instead of fiddling with an app on your phone to adjust your thermostat, you could just tell the thermostat to lower the temperature.

This benefit could transfer to other sectors, like banking. Wouldn’t it be simple to say, “Siri, pay my gas bill?” Naturally, though, there are security concerns here. Could a hacker use deepfake technology to fool your virtual assistant into thinking they’re you?

Still, there’s plenty of potential here, and we’re already tapping something similar. Telling your virtual assistant to book an appointment at the doctor amounts to the same thing.

AI and Voice Tech are Best Mates

The two are easy to incorporate and so can produce impactful results. It’s AI that makes voice tech as effective as it currently is. The voice recognition software is only part of the equation. The real utility here lies in the fact that AI can understand what you’re saying. As machine learning continues to improve, we’ll see voice tech becoming even more useful.

Final Notes

Initially, voice tech seemed like passing fad. It was fun. Who didn’t ask Siri, “Do you love me?” just to see the sassy response. Now, however, this technology is proving indispensable. We could live without it, but who’d want to?

Naturally, there are some privacy concerns here. That’s more to do with problems with how the tech is applied, rather than the tech itself. It doesn’t matter, though. Voice technology is ingrained into our social fabric.
