As you may know, hackers going by the name “Mr. Smith” recently released stolen HBO files online and demanded a ransom of $6 million from the network. If the network refuses to pay, the hackers threatened to release more episodes, emails, scripts and other files they’ve obtained. For example, a viral cyber attack on the electricity grid could cost insurance companies $21.4 to $71.1 billion. In fact, the Industrial Control Systems Cyber Emergency Response Team reported 79 cyber attacks in the energy sector in 2015 alone –– the highest number of reported attacks per sector.
