It is nearly impossible to overestimate the importance of technology for a company.  From computers to networks and servers, technology serves as an important foundation within any industry. 

If your company's technological resources are not up to par, it places the whole business in severe jeopardy.

But how can you find the right IT head for your company?  Learn the facts and points of reference to help you make the best decision for the future.

 

Overview: Responsibilities and Pay

An IT head is often referred to as the IT director, or an information systems manager.  In 2010, computer and information systems managers made a median of $115,780, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The job description of this role can vary significantly based on the company. 

According to the Houston Chronicle, this person can have "total strategic and management responsibility for IT resources ... " in a smaller company, which carries a high level of significance.  Larger companies can add another layer of strategic responsibility above this role, narrowing the scope just a bit.

In terms of the specific job responsibilities, there are few common points that an IT director or head of IT might have:

Technical Investments: From the latest in cloud computing to additional server capacities, the IT head will need to consider what is the best use of the budget.  Balance in terms of efficiency will be key to success.

Management: Often, the head of IT will recruit and train within the IT department.  From the people to computer-based threats and overall security concerns, the head of IT will have a lot to manage on a day-to-day basis.

Strategic Decisions: Ranging from cost control to technical operation changes, the person in charge will need to keep large-scale business issues in mind when making decision.  The head of IT normally has a lot of responsibility for the whole department.

Crucial Factors for Hiring the Right Person

While the position in question is not like most openings at your company, the hiring process can be tailored to fit this incredibly important position.  One size doesn't fit all, though.

That piece of advice is crucial to your hiring process. 

Make sure you know what the position will entail, and how your company might differ from the norm. This will be invaluable as you talk with the candidates and their experience and expertise. How, if at all, does it translate to your specific business?

Make sure you tailor the "normal" aspects of the job search to the position:

Education: An MBA in information technology management, or similar, is common.

Experience: Generally, 8 to 10 years in the field will offer advancement potential for a person to be a head of IT.  This can change based on your company's needs, though.

Others: Look for experience, knowledge, and intangibles that directly relates to your business.  This is crucial and can make the difference in finding the right candidate.

Prepare your job search to target the candidates that can help your business in specific ways. 

The right candidate may be the one who has less experience and education - but the right kind of each!
