Comprehensive Guidance to VPS

2010-11-04by Michelle

Virtual web hosting can be also called as shared hosting, which is generally cheap, easy to use, but has limited system resources; while dedicated servers are more powerful, and can be customized, but certain technical knowledge is needed.

If a website is of huge space and traffic, which a virtual web hosting cannot stand, however, it is also unnecessary to use dedicated server; then, you may consider VPS, i.e. virtual private server, which is a flexible, extendable and economical web hosting solution; and it is suited for such case.

Before in-depth study of the features and advantages of VPS, please be aware that VPS provided by different web hosting providers are of great differences. You have to consult the web hosting provider to make sure whether their VPS is of certain function.

On virtual web hosts, your website shares with other users' the same server, so does the resources on that server, such as: memory, disk space and CPU, etc, and you can only use functions offered by the provider.

On dedicated servers, obviously, your website is the only one served on this server and you enjoy all the resources on this server exclusively. Dedicated servers are suitable for larger-sized websites, which are of enormous database and traffic. Dedicated servers are usually very expensive, while virtual web hosting costs less than ten dollars per month.

VPS is a flexible solution which is between virtual web hosting and dedicated server, not only in turns of price, but also functions.

Just like dedicated server, websites served on VPS are of exclusive memory and disk space; just like virtual web hosts, websites served on VPS have to share CPU with others'; put it in a simple way, the memory and disk space of VPS is exclusive while the CPU of VPS is shared, the rate of CPU shared with others differs from different providers.

VPS is not only of more memory, disk space and CPU than virtual web hosts; VPS of some providers also has burstable RAM to deal with emergent memory exhaustion.

The type and level of user support service differs from each other. For example, some providers offer semi-managed VPS service, while others offer completely managed services. VPS shares most functions with dedicated server while is more advantaged in price and user support service.

To sum up, if your website is consisted of static web pages, virtual web hosting is enough; however if your website is consisted of dynamic web pages and visited by huge traffic, then VPS might be a better choice.
