Colocation Company LCL Partners with the Amsterdam Internet Exchange

00:00:00 - 31 August 2004

Diegem, 31 August 2004 - The colocation company LCL has entered into a partnership agreement with the Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX), one of Europe's largest independent nodes for the exchange of internet traffic. Through this agreement, LCL can now offer AMS-IX ports to its ISP- and web-housing clients, at its own datacentre in Diegem. They no longer need to rent space in one of the four AMS-IX locations in Amsterdam.

According to Laurens van Reijen: "By offering the possibility of acquiring AMS-IX ports at the LCL datacenter, we think we can offer an even better service to our clients. LCL will take care of the data transport to the AMS-IX in Amsterdam."

Clients can now set up peering contacts with AMS-IX members. We are convinced that our clients will be able to route about 25% to 35% of the traffic via internet, with the rest taking place via IP Transit providers, which will always remain important.

To connect to an Internet Exchange, it is essential to have your own AS number available, own IP space and a router supporting BGP4. During the past year, the amount of Internet Companies in Belgium requesting their own AS number, has raised dramatically, a sign indicating that internet is reaching maturity.

The first company making use of the AMS-IX solution of LCL is the French company Avence Multimedia, who situated their Network Operations Centre (NOC) at LCL in Diegem.

About AMS-IX

AMS-IX is an independent non-profit Internet exchange. The internet node was started at the beginning of the 90's, and in 1997 this became the AMS-IX Association in Amsterdam. All important Dutch, and a large amount of foreign Internet Service Providers, as well as other important parties in the telecommunications market, are members of the Association, and exchange IP-traffic between their networks via the AMS-IX platform on both national and international level. Hereby, high costs and complex control measures, which normally need numerous connections, are avoided.
