Liquid Web's Server-Side Performance Tops Amazon, Rackspace and DigitalOcean

LANSING, Mich., May 17, 2017/PRNewswire/ -- A study by performance analyst firmCloud Spectatorfinds that Liquid Web LLC, a$100 million managed hosting provider, beats rivals Amazon, Rackspace and DigitalOcean when it comes to website and cloud application performance. Liquid Web's virtual machines (VMs) exhibit faster processing and disk speeds, while performing more transactions and sustaining more requests per second.

Website speed is key to delivering great visitor experiences. Many web users abandon pages taking longer than a few seconds to load. Also, Google penalizes websites for being too slow, as faster websites excel when it comes to search engine optimization and conversions.

To measure website performance, theCloud Spectator reportlooked at the performance of each piece of the LAMP stack. LAMP is comprised of four components: Linux VM, Apache, MySQL and PHP, which together serve website and application content to visitors. The quality of a user's overall website or application experience begins with the quality of the LAMP stack performance.

Study results

  • Linux VM – Liquid Web's virtual processor (the VM's brain) performs tasks up to 6 times faster than Amazon AWS, and roughly 3.5 times faster than Rackspace and DigitalOcean. Input/output operations per second of Liquid Web sites performed anywhere from 2.5 to 4.5 times better. Faster processing and disk speeds lead to better overall web server performance.
  • Apache – Liquid Web's ability to serve website requests was 2.5 to 3 times better than the competition. The more requests served per second, the better the performance of the server.
  • MySQL – Liquid Web's VM handled transactions at a rate of almost 4 times the speed of Amazon AWS, DigitalOcean and Rackspace. MySQL, the most common database for storing information, allows visitors be quickly served information.
  • PHP – Liquid Web's VMs demonstrated the ability to execute PHP code, which is the most common programming language, at a rate nearly twice as good as its cloud rivals.

"Reviewing the LAMP components, Liquid Web clearly offers the highest server-side performance for users," saidMelanie Purkis, Liquid Web Managed Hosting Product Manager. "That's not a coincidence. Liquid Web is investing in the most up-to-date platforms and technologies to deliver faster website and application performance, giving people an all-around better experience, especially those with mission-critical sites."

There is no doubt that the adoption of web and cloud technologies continues to accelerate at a phenomenal rate. Arecent surveyof 450 web-dependent professionals by Liquid Web found that nearly 80 percent of designers, developers, digital agencies and SMBs expect their businesses will be more reliant on cloud and web technologies in the next five years.

As more and more companies move to the web and cloud, the expectations put on the infrastructure supporting these platforms, such as web and cloud hosting services, will continue to increase exponentially.

"If a website or application fuels the revenue generation of a business, the choice of a hosting provider should be a strategic one," said Purkis. "We understand performance matters and underperformance can cost our customers millions. That's why we are committed to employing the most helpful humans in hosting so those who manage mission-critical websites and apps can attend to business and leave the managed hosting to us."

Methodology
Cloud Spectator collected data on entry-level VMs across Liquid Web, Amazon, Rackspace and DigitalOcean for a period of 48 hours. In that two-day time frame, they ran multiple iterations of performance tests, and the median results were used to in this report.
