The Planet is the First Hosting Provider to Release the Newly Available Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4

10:18:18 - 28 February 2005

DALLAS, TX— February 28, 2005 - (HostReview) - The PlanetSM today announced that it is the first hosting vendor to offer customers Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4, Red Hat's latest release of the industry's leading Linux operating system.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 ES is immediately available to customers of The Planet. Red Hat's existing subscription customers can also obtain the new release. The Planet says the new platform will enable its enterprise customers to realize higher security and performance benefits throughout their IT environments, as well as the benefits of an open-source solution.

"We are excited to be supporting this new version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, a milestone for the entire computing industry," said Yul Shelton, Director of Managed Services at The Planet. "Red Hat Enterprise Linux has long provided reliability on par with proprietary operating systems. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 takes that even further with revolutionary performance, scalability and security advancements."

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 is designed to utilize the Linux 2.6 kernel (the core of the operating system that performs the most basic operations), improving performance and stability for 32-bit and 64-bit workloads. It includes a new version of the Linux I/O subsystem (which manages the transfer of data between internal server components), radically increasing the performance of applications that process large amounts of information.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 also improves security through an optional Security Enhanced Linux (SELinux) kernel modification. SELinux provides configurable control of access to operating system services, eliminating the vulnerabilities inherent to basing system control privileges on user and group permissions.

Mr. Shelton explained that with such comprehensive improvements, customers of The Planet wishing to migrate from older versions of Red Hat Linux will receive fresh installations of the new OS, rather than a traditional upgrade of existing software.
