Vircom Study: The Dangers of Phishing Scams Revealed

14:16:47 - 19 January 2005

Vircom Inc. (www.vircom.com), developer of Modus™ secure email management solutions, released today a white paper titled Scam Prevention Guide - How to recognize a phish when you see one.

"Vircom is committed to developing solutions to end phishing and other types of email-borne fraud," said Sylvain Durocher, president and founder of Vircom. "In conjunction, we are actively working to educate consumers on how to identify phishing scams and avoid becoming victims of online fraud."

The second volume in its series on Exposing Email-Borne Fraud, the document explains how phishing attacks occur and offers valuable information on how to avoid victimization.

Phishing is one of today's fastest-growing types of email fraud. The Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG) reported more than 1500 active phishing websites and 51 instances of brand spoofing in November 2004 alone.

Fraudsters use spoofed but authentic-looking emails and websites to con unsuspecting victims into divulging personal information which scammers then use to commit financial fraud and identity theft.

Montreal-based Vircom is a leading developer of secure email management and authentication solutions for the demanding needs of Internet Service Providers, the real estate industry, corporations and healthcare facilities.
