New Policyfor .in Internet Domain Name

With a view to bring about significant improvement in Indian Internet domain name registration system and to connect all Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in India to a National Internet Exchange the Government has announced the New Policy for the .in Internet domain name.

Shri Maran said while the internet domain name registration system will focus greatly to proliferate the Internet, connecting all ISPs of the country to the National Internet Exchange is aimed to achieve efficient internet traffic routing and cost reduction, thereby improving the quality of service for the internet users in India.

Today's announcement made by the Minister is in consonance with the Ten Point Programme for the Department of Information Technology (DIT), announced by him earlier.

One of the focus areas of the Ten Point Agenda was to increase the PC penetration and thereby bring cyber connectivity to every citizen. 

The new policy for .in Domain Name registration covers unlimited generic .in registration will be offered at 2nd level of Domain Name, Registrations will be carried out by Registrars to be appointed by the .in Registry through an open process of selection on the basis of transparent eligibility criteria, the .in Registry will adopt Uniform Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP) and others.

Internet Domain Names worldwide have assumed greater significance in recent times with the Internet increasingly being used as an effective medium for commerce, governance, education and communication.

The INNIC under NIXI will function as an autonomous body with the primary responsibility to maintain .in Domain and ensure its operational stability, reliability and security. It will implement the various elements of the new policy set out by the Government.
