Alcatel Launches OmniSwitch Solutions for Commercial Networks

00:00:00 - 20 October 2004

Alcatel (www.alcatel) broadened its portfolio of enterprise network infrastructure solutions with a combination of new products and capabilities for its OmniSwitch 6000 enterprise workgroup product family.
All of the additions give the OmniSwitch 6000 series the unique ability to offer chassis-grade availability, security, and manageability at the industry's best value.

"The Alcatel OmniSwitch 6600 family is the perfect solution for customers who feel that they should not pay a price penalty for sophisticated features and do not want to sacrifice the network to commodity-level products," said Tom Burns, senior vice president and general manager of Alcatel's network infrastructure activities.

Alcatel's new OmniSwitch 6602 is a fully featured workgroup switch built on the Alcatel Operating System (AOS), the industry's only truly singular operating system.

AOS brings chassis-grade availability at the network edge and allows customers to manage the OmniSwitch 6602 like any Alcatel chassis switch, reap the benefits of policy-based OneTouch QoS and Virtual LAN (VLAN) tools, and support the implementation of Alcatel's innovative Automated Quarantine Engine (AQE) for virus containment.

The Alcatel OmniSwitch 6600 U24 fiber-to-the-desk solution is another new AOS workgroup addition. It was designed for both military networks where fiber is required for security and for campus networks where workstations exceed the distance supported by copper cabling.

Together with Alcatel authenticated VLANs, SecureAccess management, and AQE for attack containment, the solution reinforces Alcatel's leadership in delivering the industry's strongest switch security.

Alcatel also announced today that the Alcatel OmniSwitch 6600 workgroup switch joins the OmniSwitch 7000 in supporting 802.3af Power over Ethernet (POE). This new POE capability will now allow Alcatel OmniSwitch 6000 customers to power a wide range of devices using existing Category 5 cable and drive new appreciation of IP Telephony and Wireless.
