00:00:00 - 19 August 2004

August 19, 2004 - (HostReview.com) - Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) today announced one of the largest open standards-based software rollouts in the New South Wales (NSW) government.

As part of the initial contract, Sun will migrate 1,500 users across 120 offices within the RTA's Registry Environment. The next phases of deployment are planned to connect up to 3,000 users to the new system. Future plans also include leveraging the Sun Java System Portal Server, Sun Java System Access Manager, Sun Java System Identity Manager and Sun Java System Directory Server Enterprise Edition software products to support enterprise-wide portal, directory and identity management capabilities.

"We realize that more and more governments are looking for alternatives because they are frustrated with escalating IT costs and the increased proliferation of viruses and worms, which ultimately affect information security and worker productivity," said Larry Singer, senior vice president, strategic insights officer, Sun Microsystems.

The Sun Infrastructure Solution for Enterprise Messaging Consolidation improves critical enterprise communications, enhances security, and lowers the cost of ownership by up to half of an equivalent Microsoft Exchange deployment.

A key component of the Sun Java Desktop System product, StarOffice software is an open-source based, comprehensive office productivity suite that runs on Solaris(, Windows and Linux operating systems and is compatible with Microsoft Office file formats. The StarOffice suite has a simple, intuitive interface that includes word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, drawing and database capabilities.

StarOffice software is available in over 40 countries and from over 60 original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). For more information, visit http://www.sun.com/staroffice.
