Hostway Releases Results Of Survey On Perceptions Of Public Cloud Vs. In-House Hosting Services

NEW YORK CITY,June 27, 2013/PRNewswire/ -- Hostway, a leading provider of cloud, managed and hybrid hosting services, today announced the results of a survey the company conducted at the 2013 Cloud Expo East, heldJune 10-13, 2013, and widely attended by IT infrastructure professionals and others focused on Big Data and cloud computing issues. The survey was designed to measure participant perceptions about security, scalability and performance of key services in public cloud vs. in-house hosting environments.

On security issues, survey participants were asked which of the following services is more secure in a public cloud vs. an in-house setting: web servers, database servers, email services, CRM and additional collaboration software. Signaling a significant shift in perceptions, even among audiences generally comfortable with cloud services, 62% of survey respondents indicated that key services are more secure in a public cloud environment.

Attitudes toward in-house and cloud service scalability were also measured for these key services. The survey found that 80% of participants rated public cloud services more scalable than their in-house counterparts. The final portion of the survey was designed to deliver insights on the overall performance of these core services in an in-house vs. public cloud environment. The survey revealed that 73% of respondents preferred public cloud hosting to in-house services based on performance.

Overall, the results showed an overwhelming preference for public cloud hosting services over in-house resources among survey participants. Database services were revealed to be the most controversial of services measured: Only 55% felt databases were more secure in the public cloud compared to 62% who preferred the public cloud across all services. On the performance question, 64% felt that databases performed better in the public cloud vs. 73% for all services.
