New Line2 Survey Reveals 82.47% of iPhone Users Are Interested in Using VoIP as Their Primary Calling Platform

13:33:15 - 18 May 2010

San Francisco, CA — Just a few years ago, VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) was something only tech geeks were using as their primary calling platform. Now it appears that VoIP calls may soon be replacing cellular calls as the mobile calling platform of choice among both business users and consumers. Toktumi recently conducted a survey of their Line2 iPhone users asking them if they would be interested in using Line2 as their primary dialer instead of the built-in iPhone cell dialer. Over 82% (998 out of 1210) respondents said they would be interested in switching to Line2 VoIP as their primary mode of calling.

"That is an astonishing number considering most of the respondents have only been using Line2 for a few months," said Peter Sisson, CEO of Toktumi. "We decided to poll our customers to learn about their Line2 habits, likes, dislikes, and future wishes. I was pleasantly surprised how much people valued the flexibility and features Line2 offers compared to the normal iPhone calling experience.”

Also of note is that 14% of Line2 users are using the iPod Touch and iPad as alternatives to traditional cell phones for making mobile calls. The United States has more Wi-Fi hotspots than any other country in the world.  This makes Wi-Fi calling using Line2 on these devices a viable alternative to a traditional cell phone.  At just $14.95/month for unlimited US/Canada calling, this can result in substantial savings for consumers.

The number one reason users gave for trying Line2 was to make calls over Wi-Fi VoIP due to poor cell reception. Line2 solves this problem without requiring customers to juggle between different applications and unfamiliar calling methods.  Dialing a number is the same whether the call is placed over Wi-Fi or Cellular.

As the only dual mode VoIP / Cell calling app, Line2 is leading the industry down this path with Wi-Fi VoIP as the primary calling method, backed up by 3G VoIP when Wi-Fi is unavailable and finally traditional cell network calls only when absolutely necessary.

In addition to being able to place calls where they don’t have good cell reception, survey respondents listed other reasons they use Line2.  These include being able to reduce their AT&T bill (17%), adding a second number for business calls to their iPhone (16%), to be able to make calls, yet keep their regular cell phone number private (12%), to get access to advanced features like call screening (10%), and to be able to place cheap international calls and call home for free when overseas (9%).

Line2 is a $0.99 download in the app store that comes with 30 days of free service.  After that, service costs just $14.95/month for unlimited US/Canada calling, international rates as low as $0.02/min., and contains features such as 20 person conference calling, simulring, auto attendant, and call handling rules.
