Emic Application Cluster Enhances Apache Reliability and Scalability

00:00:00 - 23 January 2003

NEW YORK, Jan 22, 2003 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Emic Networks today announced Emic Application Cluster (EAC) for Apache. EAC for Apache is a new application-clustering product, designed to provide best price/performance Lintel (Linux/Intel) -based cluster platform for horizontal scaling of web applications. EAC scales economically from small and medium size environments to high-end server platform environments. EAC's benefits include performance scalability and load balancing, fault tolerance and continuous availability, and centralized management.

Apache has been the most popular web server on the Internet since April of 1996. The December 2002 Netcraft Web Server Survey found that 62% of the domains and 67% of active sites are using Apache, thus making it more widely used than all other web servers combined.

EAC combines multiple physical Apache web servers, working as one logical, high performance and fault tolerant web server. It takes full advantage of available resources and balances the workload between clustered nodes. EAC delivers almost linear scalability as nodes are added to the cluster. This enables organizations to predict the cost of scaling up web services to the enterprise level system, and provides a higher degree of confidence that the web services will continue to perform well as they scale up.

"With EAC, lower-cost Intel-based systems can easily match the performance and reliability of expensive RISC systems," said Kari Honkanen, CTO at Emic Networks. "EAC for Apache continues to expand Emic Application Clustering to cover the complete high-performance and highly reliable clustered web solutions. EAC has previously been available for MySQL, the most popular open source database. Both EAC for Apache and EAC for MySQL products share a common, very intuitive Administration Client that allows managing several clusters either locally or remotely."

"We only use the Apache Web Server for our web hosting clients. Speed is especially important when serving busy web sites. Reliability is extremely important. The combination of Apache and EAC delivers maximum speed and reliability," said Ismo Paananen, managing director at Optinet, whose hosting customers are the biggest sport federations in Finland.

Emic Application Cluster for Apache is available today, starting at $995. A free evaluation version is available for downloading at www.applicationcluster.com.
