What are the main virtualization platforms and their differences?

OpenVZ is an operating-system-level virtualization platform that works like Xen, but provides only a thin layer of virtualization on top of the underlying OS. All virtual servers on an OpenVZ node will share the same core Linux kernel, (this is the reason why OpenVZ only supports Linux OS templates) and will also suffer alike from issues like kernel crashes. But these small drawbacks put aside, OpenVZ is easier to understand, more affordable, and usually performs z lot better for smaller virtual servers, because it has the extra resources available that a Xen VPS would be using to run its completely isolated environment.

XEN on the other hand, is considered the slightly more reliable virtualization software, a para-virtualization platform that creates virtual servers with almost exactly the same characteristics as dedicated servers (total isolation). A Xen VPS runs its own isolated kernel, loads its own kernel modules, uses fully dedicated virtualized memory, I/O and scheduler, and will be just as stable and versatile as a dedicated server. It even supports Windows Server. You'll never know that you're just using a virtual machine, at a slightly higher cost.

If you are not sure about which platform would fit your needs best, OpenVZ will probably offer an easier and more affordable solution, unless you already know that you will require swap space, or specific kernel modules that OpenVZ may not support.
