Sentinare Launches Anti-Virus Solution Against the Microsoft JPEG Exploit

00:00:00 - 07 October 2004

Continuing on it's flawless track record of 100% virus detection, Sentinare Messaging has announced that its latest version of PostGuard (a web based spam and virus quarantine) successfully detects and quarantines the latest JPEG virus threat, keeping users email safe.

"Our customers demand a high level of protection," states Chris Paul, co-founder and CTO. "They rely on our spam and virus detection abilities to keep their businesses running smoothly, so we take any new threats very seriously - whether they be proofs of concept or actual exploits - and act quickly in order to offer them continuous protection."

Sentinare Messaging Solutions is an ASP provider of email security services. Sentinare boasts a 100% virus detection record two years running without a single chink in its armor.

As code which takes advantage of the Microsoft JPEG exploit begins circulating, Anti-Virus researchers are warning that desktop Anti-Virus software may not be able to provide protection against the attack.

Using the default settings, desktop Anti-Virus applications do not normally scan JPEG files. Microsoft's JPEG rendering engine, which is also used in popular email clients like Outlook and Outlook Express, processes images prior to caching, meaning that unpatched PCs could become infected even if users have updated their Anti-Virus software.

Sentinare's web based filter is able to shield users from the exploit by running the virus scan on the server side. When an email arrives for a Sentinare customer it is scanned for viruses and spam content before it reaches the recipient.

Sentinare Messaging Solutions is a leading provider of e-mail security services for small businesses to enterprise. The company offers a complete suite of products including outsourced proxy email filtering, secure email hosting, spam and virus detection, and encrypted webmail.
