The Senient Cloud Platform Enters Beta

Boston, MA (PRWEB)May 25, 2017 - Senient Systems, the data center infrastructure startup, has announced the beta availability of the Senient Container Appliance, a hardware platform delivering 80% total cost of ownership savings and a 75% reduction in energy usage.

The appliance, which was developed in Senient's Edinburgh, Scotland research & design center and launched at its US headquarters in Boston this week, is aimed at businesses who are deploying container-based virtualization and are looking for a more efficient way to deploy and scale cloud infrastructure.

The Senient Container Appliance is a 2U hardware enclosure which integrates CPU, RAM, high-performance NVMe storage and network bandwidth, all of which can be physically isolated, ideal for hosting containers. With its ultra-compact footprint and low power utilization, it not only delivers savings on energy consumption and rack space, but it also enables radically faster time to market, said Senient CEO Tyler Foster.

The appliance that dramatically accelerates time to market

"In a traditional model, companies who want to build a container farm need to architect a technical solution and everything that entails, from switches and bandwidth to network links, boxes and software layer -- a process that can take up 3 months, or even longer if they go through lengthy procurement," Foster said. "With the Senient Container Appliance, businesses buy a fully integrated system, rack it, and they have a container farm that is completely secure and available on day one."

Senient Systems Chairman Aydin Kurt-Elli, an entrepreneur and veteran of the data center and cloud industry, said Senient has delivered a disruptive technology that tackles a little-discussed problem in the industry: the cost of deploying and scaling in the cloud isn't just high, it's also hard to calculate in advance, leading to real commercial uncertainty for companies who want to use cloud infrastructure.

The Senient Container Appliance is available now for on-premises, public cloud and hybrid cloud deployments. Foster said that while the appliance's leap forward in data center infrastructure density may be its most striking characteristic, technologists are likely to be most taken with other aspects of the system, including its security features.

"There's no doubt we’re pushing out what is currently the cutting edge of data center density, because we're enabling businesses to fit 3.763 teraflops’ worth of infrastructure into less than a quarter of a rack," he said. "But under the hood is where the Senient Container Appliance really gets interesting. We are significantly more secure than most approaches to data center infrastructure: the management layer of the appliance, for instance, is completely physically isolated, so it can't be attacked from an instance kernel, even running on bare metal."

Designed for security from the ground up

Established in 2014, Senient Systems was cofounded by Tyler and his brother Scott Foster, Senient's VP of Engineering. Scott, formerly of Apple's Platform Architecture group, led the development of the Senient Container Appliance including the hardware’s unique, ground-up design for security. Tyler, formerly of big data firm Cloudera, led the development of the appliance’s integrated Infrastructure Management System (IMS). The appliance is Senient's first and flagship offering and is due to be followed later this year by Senient's new IMS as-a-service offering, code-named Aether.
