10:42:35 - 24 June 2011

DreamHost to Commit Technology to the Open Source Cloud Stack

DreamHost, a global full-service web hosting company, today announced its commitment to support the development of OpenStack, an open source cloud operating system and global development community with more than 75 participating organizations.

DreamHost, an established long-term player in the hosting space, has been a strong supporter of open source software and the open source community for many years. The promise of OpenStack -- driving open standards for public and private clouds -- is a benefit to all community participants, users and to the rapidly changing hosting industry at large. OpenStack aims to be simple to implement, massively scalable, feature-rich, and above all else, open.

DreamHost's software development team has been contributing code to the OpenStack project over a period of several months and will continue to do so for the long term, leveraging next-generation technology incubated within DreamHost's own development team into the burgeoning cloud operating system. Among its many ongoing contributions, DreamHost is working to integrate Ceph, a distributed, scalable, open source file system built from the ground up for managing data on a petabyte scale, with OpenStack.

"We had originally created Ceph to address an industry need for a commodity-based open source distributed data storage platform," says DreamHost's Ben Cherian, General Manager of Emerging Technologies. "When we learned of the OpenStack project, we saw a real opportunity to apply this technology to a larger community effort. We believe that the future of cloud computing is in open source, and efforts like OpenStack are key to realizing its full potential."

DreamHost is proud to be involved with the OpenStack project and is eager to help the project mature through their ongoing contributions.

"We are excited to strengthen the OpenStack community through the ongoing contributions of DreamHost, a service provider with deep expertise around open source distributed data storage," said Stephen Spector, Community Manager, OpenStack. "We welcome DreamHost's contributions and their shared vision of a scalable and open cloud."
