Could Your Website’s Reputation Be Harmed?

2016-08-05by Dave Thomas

The time and effort you put into your company’s website should not go unnoticed.

That said you don’t want someone bringing your website and your online reputation for that matter crashing down. Think it can’t happen to you? If so, think again.

As all too many business owners have discovered (especially in recent years), their websites are targets for identity theft thieves and online criminals in general. When they strike, they can do so with vengeance.

So that you can decrease the odds you will be the next victim, make sure you and your employees are doing all you can to protect the integrity of your site.

Remember, your site’s reputation (not to mention your overall business) could be harmed with just one successful identity theft strike.

So, are you prepared to give your website the full attention it needs and deserves?

Look Inside and Outside for Threats

It is always important to keep in mind that I.D. theft and other online attacks can just as easily come from within your company as outside of it.

With that being the case, here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Be realistic – For starters, don’t go around thinking your business is 100 percent immune to identity theft attacks and other cyber warfare. It is better to be open-minded and err on the side of caution than to think it can never happen to you. Part of the realism should come in the form of always reviewing the security plans you have in place for your site. Are they enough? Are they outdated? Are they something that both employees and outsiders couldn’t penetrate? Being realistic and reviewing your procedures regularly certainly should lessen your vulnerability;

  • Be secure – No matter how much money you try and save as a business owner, you should never be lackadaisical when it comes to securing your business. As for your website, you can look around for deals to secure your online footprints as best as possible. Many security software companies will run specials from time to time. Whether you look at a LifeLock promo code or other such offers, find a company that has your best security interests at heart;

  • Be Alert – One of the most disturbing things you can come across as an employer is discovering that one or more of your employee in fact turn out to be identity theft thieves. Along with breaking their agreement with you to be the best employees they could be, they’ve undoubtedly broken the law. If you find suspicious financial transactions, customer data missing etc. launch a full investigation at once. This is why some business owners like to have more than one person overseeing certain aspect of their companies. For instance, it would not hurt to have more than one set of eyes checking the financial books on a regular basis. Having to rely on one person exclusively can present a number of problems, including if they have criminal ideas in mind;

  • Be socially responsible – Lastly, your company’s social media outreach should always be a high priority, yet done in a manner that is protective of your business. More and more identity theft thieves are using social networking to go after both consumer and business interests. As a result, your company could be targeted. While you should encourage your employees to post socially relevant items about your brand, your industry etc. remind them that they positively can’t post anything sensitive to customer or company information. You might also want to lock your social accounts (Twitter, Facebook etc.) just to be safe. That way, only approved accounts can follow and friend you.

Your online efforts are essential to having a successful business model, especially in today’s Internet world.

There is absolutely no reason you should not be pouring time and even some money into your website endeavors.

That said make sure security is at the top of the list in terms of online priorities.

If your website reputation is harmed, it can be for the entire world to see.

That ends up being a problem that no business owner wants or needs for that matter.

Don’t be that business owner dealing with that mess.
