Comodo's Free Secure Email Digitally Signs And Encrypts Emails For Optimum Security

Comodo Group Inc

Comodo SecureEmail is available for download and can be used to automatically encrypt and sign all outgoing messages

August 21, 2008; 10:39 AM

Comodo, a leading Certification Authority and Internet security company, announced today the availability of version 1.0 of SecureEmail. Comodo SecureEmail employs well-established, de facto industry standard, PKI-based solutions/technologies that enable encryption and digital signature of outgoing emails, assuring recipients that the email has not been tampered with during transmission. Comodo's solution can be deployed with either Comodo or third party SSL Certificates.

Email is one of the most vulnerable systems to attack. Comodo SecureEmail is the install-and-forget application that can automatically encrypt and sign all messages. Featuring full integration with Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird and other S/MIME-capable email clients, it includes a built-in wizard that allows users to easily download and setup a free Comodo email certificate. This helps automate the digital certificate acquisition, distribution, signature and encryption processes, freely building a secure email community. COMODO SecureEmail also helps companies further their compliance with HIPAA, SOX, GLBA, PCI and the UK Data Protection Act.

Version 1.0 of Comodo SecureEmail comes in either regular or Pro edition, which are both free. Those using SecureEmail Pro can integrate their secure email with third party certificates. The application also can address difficult or hard-to-remember processes such as public-key exchange. Network administrators looking to implement total client-to-client email security can use Comodo SecureEmail as a complement to any existing gateway encryption process.

Comodo offers this solution free to help accelerate market adoption of the practice of signing and encrypting email communications to protect users from the inherent vulnerability of sending email over the Internet. The general public has slowly adopted S/MIME certificates, largely because setting up and maintaining a secure email system has traditionally been too complex for most users. To avoid the complicated public key exchange process normally needed for securing and signing email, Comodo SecureEmail automatically generates a unique, 'single-use' session certificate to encrypt outgoing emails to recipients whenever an email certificate is not present on the system. Comodo's built-in wizard allows users to easily download and setup a free Comodo email certificate as well.

Comodo SecureEmail addresses this complexity issue and, once installed, the application will automatically monitor all incoming and outgoing mails.

Other key features include:

  • Available in 32 bit and 64 bit versions for Windows XP and Window Vista
  • Innovative session certificate:
To avoid the complicated public key exchange process normally needed for securing and signing email, Comodo SecureEmail automatically generates a unique, 'single-use' session certificate to encrypt outgoing emails to recipients whenever an email certificate is not present on the system.
  • Whole journey encryption:
Many corporations use an email gateway that encrypts messages as they leave the corporate perimeter. The problem with this approach is that it leaves internal mail completely unprotected and vulnerable to malware, packet sniffing and malicious insiders. Mail that is heading from the network towards the gateway is similarly vulnerable. The only way to completely secure email traffic is to implement client-to-client encryption. Comodo SecureEmail fills this potential security hole by providing whole journey encryption from sender's mail client to recipient's mail client.
  • Automatic certificate exchange, installation and updates:
SecureEmail's notification system ensures that both sender and recipient are updated with each others certificates. SecureEmail also automatically imports all relevant mail settings for major email clients to ensure the fastest possible set-up time.
  • Built in wizard for easy sign-up and installation of a Comodo Free email Certificate.

"SecureEmail is another addition to Comodo's portfolio of desktop security solutions," said Melih Abdulhayoglu, CEO and Chief Security Architect of Comodo. "We create solutions that enable people to communicate, collaborate and access the Internet confidently. We continue to innovate with SecureEmail, a worthy addition to our award-winning free solutions."
