The Planet Available to Provide Expert Commentary on "Green" Data Center Practices for Earth Day

To celebrate the 28^th anniversary of Earth Day, The Planet today announced that Jeff Lowenberg, vice president of facilities, will be available to provide commentary on “green” data center efficiencies.  As the world’s largest privately held dedicated hosting company, The Planet operates six world-class data centers with more than 50,000 servers.  The new “green” initiatives are expected to save more than $1 million in 2008 alone, based on a recently completed six-month study.    

What:

With energy costs continuing to rise, data center executives face the challenge of maintaining full efficiency and peak performance.  More than 22,000 customers – primarily small- and medium-sized enterprises –  rely on The Planet for maintaining their IT infrastructure, Internet connections and online businesses. 

Why:

The Planet also improved its “coefficient of efficiency,” an EPA- and Uptime Institute-recognized measurement of the total power necessary to operate a data center, divided by critical power, which represents the energy required to operate its computers.  The company increased its rating to 1.7 – a near-ideal number – from its previous “good” ranking of 2.0. 

Initial results demonstrate that while critical server loads increased by 5 percent, power used for cooling decreased by 31 percent.  Overall, the company experienced power reductions of up to 13.5 percent through a broad range of improvements.
