SoftLayer Launches Next Generation of Industry's First Open API

March 3, 2008, Dallas, TX – SoftLayer launched its Application Protocol Interface (API) 3.0, an even more enhanced version of the industry’s first open source API.

API 3.0 provides system-to-system access to the more than 100 backend functions also available through SoftLayer’s proprietary, industry-leading Customer Portal. It can securely connect any system regardless of device or location—even mobile devices such as a RIM Blackberry or Apple iPhone—via SoftLayer’s innovative “network-within-a-network” private network topology. Its improvements over the previous generation include:

• Highly-integrated, object-oriented approach

• Greater .NET, Java, and Ruby on Rails compatibility

• Deeper integration with SoftLayer’s core Portal SOA design

As with SoftLayer’s earlier API versions, API 3.0 continues to be capable of using both SOAP and XML-RPC interfaces and, as an open, standards-based platform, can fully integrate with any thirdparty or custom application.

“It really leverages the open-source advantage,” Mr. Day said. “Since releasing the first open API last summer, we’ve been overwhelmed by the customer and development network response. They have generated a lot of ideas and created countless custom control panels and client-side applications. We’ve incorporated their feedback into our roadmap and created a new version that will continue to fuel use and development.”

SoftLayer API 3.0 is available at no cost to all SoftLayer customers. Anyone with a connection to the private network, either directly connected through their SoftLayer server or logged in remotely through a VPN, may use API-based applications.
