Sun with Leading Position for UNIX Disk Storage Systems

Santa Clara, California - September 3, 2004 - Sun Microsystems, Inc. today announced that its Network Storage division took the leading position in UNIX (R) disk storage systems factory revenue, terabytes and units shipped, according to IDC's Q2-2004 Worldwide Disk Storage Systems Quarterly Tracker. Sun also jumped past competitors EMC, HP and IBM, to take the number one position in UNIX storage revenue in Q2CY04. Additionally, Sun remained number one in UNIX Units, where it gained 12.8 points of market share, year over year. The next closest competitor in this area only grew by .6 percent, while HP saw double-digit decline.

"Customers are realizing how important it is to have storage as part of their end-to-end IT infrastructure, as a result we have demonstrated growth in market share and volume," said Mark Canepa, executive vice president, Sun Network Storage. "Over the past several years we have built a comprehensive portfolio, as we fine turn our offerings we look forward to expanding our market opportunities."

Additionally, Sun's focus on expanding its storage footprint and attach rate over the past year is beginning to pay off, evidenced by a strong year-over-year increase in storage units, in both UNIX and total systems. Illustrating market momentum, Sun has increased market share for the second consecutive quarter in the following segments: total disk storage systems market revenue, terabytes and units shipped; UNIX revenue, terabytes and units shipped; and the Open SAN category (Storage Area Networks) market revenue.
