TeleCity, the leading European provider of colocation and data center services, today announced that its Harbour Exchange data center in London has achieved BS7799 certification for information security management, the ultimate benchmark in information security.

BS7799 is a recognised industry standard for benchmarking Information Security Management Systems within an organisation.  Once achieved, BS7799 certification demonstrates an organisation's formal, ongoing commitment to protecting the confidentiality, integrity and availability of both customers and its own information from internal and external threat and identifies the organisation as a safe trading partner.

To achieve certification, TeleCity had to demonstrate to an external auditor that its security systems complied with the ten aspects of the standard. These include security policy, risk analysis and treatment, access control, physical and environmental security, business continuity and compliance, and the ongoing availability of the site infrastructure.

Andy Horn, Managing Director of TeleCity UK said: "As a trusted data center provider, TeleCity has always been at the forefront in developing high quality physical security procedures.  While already confident in the quality of existing procedures, which are certified to ISO9001, we wanted to provide our customers with a guarantee that TeleCity will adequately protect their information and systems and entrench a formal, certified commitment to the ongoing availability of our facilities."

He continued: "As one of only 200 organisations with this accreditation in the UK, our compliance with BS7799 is a measure of our commitment to security management and demonstrates that TeleCity takes security seriously.  We are always looking for ways to improve our service offering and differentiate ourselves from the competition.  The completion of the audit is a testament to the hard work of our staff and our commitment to our customers to provide top quality systems and processes."

TeleCity worked closely throughout the project with Red Island who provided consultancy in order to meet the exacting standard and is now in the process of gaining certification in all data center sites across Europe.

The BS 7799 security standard was established a decade ago and gives organisations the framework for benchmarking Information Security Management Systems (ISMS) within an organisation. It is based on risk assessment and the Plan-Do-Check-Act model, which are two key ingredients of corporate governance.
