ARMONK, NY -- Aug 23, 2004 -- IBM Global Services today announced that it is the top hosted services provider in Western Europe, according to the Ovum report, "Ranking of European Hosted Services Players."

"Our hosting services are a key offering of IBM Global Services," said Mark Morin, general manager, IBM Global Services. "We are continuously using our client's feedback to expand and improve our services, specifically in application hosting and total solutions, and we are extremely proud to see that our efforts have resulted in an industry-leading status."

Ovum defines a hosted service provider as a company that offers outsourced services that differ from traditional outsourcing models -- meaning the company delivers standardized, shared operation services over the Internet and other WAN networks. To establish the leading providers of hosted services, Ovum estimated the percentages of revenues earned from the following hosted services:

  • Repeatable business process-led services shared among several clients
  • Remotely delivered application services using shared resources
  • Infrastructure services (both remotely managed and/or hosted services spanning data centre services, managed servers & databases, performance monitoring, security services, storage services and business continuity)
  • Web hosting -- the provision of infrastructure and application services to support the hosting of Web sites.

"At Ovum, our rankings are based on the company's revenues from hosted services, which for this report we have included services that some companies may have re-labeled as ASP or utility computing," said Katy Ring of Ovum. "After analyzing each company's hosted services offerings and estimating their revenues, we believe that IBM was the top provider in Western Europe."
