Spam Eating $4 Billion a Year in Corporate Productivity, Says Yankee Group

BOSTON - According to the recent Yankee Group report, E-Mail Security
Solutions Providers Seek to Stop Spam and Viruses at the Perimeter, half
of all e-mails sent today is spam. The challenge of filtering unwanted
messages at the edge of U.S. businesses has created a $140 million market.
"Antispam
and content filtering are critical new components in enterprise security
defense, helping to reduce corporate liability related to offensive content,"
says Phebe Waterfield, Security Solutions & Services analyst. "They
are the first of what the Yankee Group defines as application-driven security
services, which focus on core business problems, and not just on the perimeter." "The
core challenge in addressing unsolicited commercial e-mail is defining
what is, or is not, spam," Waterfield says. "The definition
is unique to each individual. This makes it difficult to control via legislation;
governments do not have the right to determine what messages are legitimate
for enterprises or individuals. Enterprises are exercising their right
to control content on private networks using feature-rich, content-filtering
solutions." The Yankee
Group examined 35 solutions to provide a competitive analysis of service
providers and a 5-year forecast. According to the report, the ability
to address business issues in the context of a single application is attractive
to enterprises. Syntegra and MessageLabs offer managed email services
that address the multiple security and regulatory risks faced by organizations
today. NOTE TO EDITORS
