PALO ALTO, Calif., Feb. 9, 2004 - Ushering in a new era of standardization in enterprise computing, HP today announced numerous new systems, software and services that help enterprise customers achieve greater competitive advantage. The offerings enable companies to better leverage standardization – through industry-standard architectures, reusable components and consistent implementation – to reduce costs and simplify change. As a result, HP and its strategic partners help customers simplify their IT environments and create more business value.

“Standardization is central to the HP Adaptive Enterprise strategy,” said Scott Stallard, senior vice president and general manager, Enterprise Storage and Servers, HP. “These new systems, software and services from HP and our partners enable customers to standardize their people, processes and technologies and lay the foundation for increased business agility.”

“FTD partnered with HP to offer our membership of approximately 20,000 florists a standardized technology solution which combines powerful features, flexibility and manageability at an affordable cost,” said Bob Norton, chairman and chief executive officer, FTD. “The partnership between FTD and HP enables FTD’s member florists to seamlessly process floral orders sent across the street or around the world.”

HP expands and evolves full server portfolio to industry standards

HP has now evolved its full server portfolio to industry-standard architectures – x86 and Itanium® – with the unveiling of the HP NonStop Advanced Architecture. The NonStop servers will use the Intel® Itanium 2 processor as the robust, standards-based foundation of its fault-tolerant environment.

In addition, a fully refreshed HP 9000 server line provides customers a clear path to Intel Itanium 2-based platforms. The Itanium-based HP Integrity server line is now complete with the introduction of entry-level servers ideal for the telecommunications, security and high-performance technical computing markets. Customers can further benefit from standards with the increased use of common components between the two server lines.

Vanguard Car Rental, owner of Alamo Rent A Car and National Car Rental ANC, employs 14,000 workers in more than 80 countries and relies solely on HP technology for its business.

“HP has consistently offered us smart choices for our infrastructure based on industry standards that allow us to adapt to growth and change,” said Tyler Best, chief information officer, Vanguard Car Rental. “We have used the HP ProLiant server line for many years and are planning to also upgrade our reservation system with two HP Superdomes in the near future. By standardizing on HP we enjoy a lower cost of ownership, better return on investment and quicker time to market for our customers.”

Continued differentiation with focused innovations

HP continues to differentiate its products with focused innovation based on industry standards. Extending its standardization efforts to deliver on its vision of grid computing for the enterprise, HP announced the Automatic Flexing interface, the first grid-based interface for commercial data center environments.

The Automatic Flexing interface provides an application programming interface (API) that allows applications to control the request and release of compute resources in a virtualized, heterogeneous infrastructure. HP Labs leveraged grid standards for Web services middleware to develop the Automatic Flexing interface to meet real-time business demands by horizontally scaling applications.

The Automatic Flexing interface is expected to be available and deployed on a range of HP virtualization offerings in the near future. More information about the interface is available at www.hp.com/go/standardization/presskit.

In the telecommunications industry, network and equipment providers are moving away from cumbersome, proprietary technologies and relying more on modular, standards-based solutions for the speed and flexibility they need to serve customer demand. Building on this trend, HP announced significant enhancements to its HP OpenCall portfolio of telecommunications software in the areas of interactive voice solutions (VoiceXML-based), network signaling (SS7-based) and location-based services. More information about these enhancements is available at www.hp.com/go/standardization/presskit.

HP also continues to deliver innovation for the most advanced computing interconnect requirements. HP InfiniBand optimizes clustered HP Integrity servers running HP-UX for commercial database and high-performance technical computing markets.

Reusable components in storage and client management

Reusable components deliver a step-wise approach to building an adaptive enterprise. By breaking down monolithic structures, IT departments can respond to change faster to take advantage of business opportunities. To this end, HP introduced the HP StorageWorks ESL E-series tape libraries.

To be offered in both LTO Ultrium 460 and SDLT 320 industry-standard drive formats, the HP StorageWorks ESL712e and ESL630e enterprise tape automation systems are self-aware tape solutions designed specifically for use in storage area network environments. The ESL712e and ESL630e libraries offer customers the ability to modularly scale their storage capacity with additional tape cartridges and to scale performance of tape storage read-write functions with additional Ultrium 460 and SDLT 320 tape drives. This modularity is achieved while reusing the intelligent management features of the E-series tape libraries.

Built on a foundation of modular storage components and designed to bring modularity to SAN environments, the HP StorageWorks Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA) family now includes a pay-per-use financing program. Businesses with uncertain storage capacity requirements can reduce cost and risk by paying only for what they use.

Advancing the framework for modular management, new HP Client Manager Software standardizes management of desktop systems and plugs into adaptive management through HP Systems Insight Manager (SIM). HP Client Management Solutions 6.0, including HP Client Manager Software 6.0, offers improved usability, scalability, security and globalization features for more stable and consistent hardware and software lifecycle management across the enterprise.

New HP Systems Insight Manager Connector software provides seamless integration of PC management into the HP SIM for complete client hardware and software lifecycle management from within the HP SIM console. More information about these storage and software offerings is available at www.hp.com/go/standardization/presskit.

Consistent implementation for greater productivity

Consistent implementation entails a consistent approach to people, process and technology to respond quickly to change. HP continues to develop and enhance programs, built for the particular needs of enterprises, that provide an evolution path to business and IT standardization. With increased productivity and faster time to market, businesses can then focus on competitive differentiation.

Addressing standardization in printing, HP’s new CMYK Plus specification ensures consistent color and quality for print service providers. By enabling print service providers to achieve rich, vibrant colors without intervention, such as time-consuming file separations, CMYK Plus automatically preserves the integrity of customers’ brands across all marketing vehicles. More information about this specification is available at www.hp.com/go/standardization/presskit.

HP is delivering enterprise migration programs to simplify and standardize software upgrades. Those capabilities include applications and infrastructure consolidation services that enable a standardized approach when upgrading software. In addition, HP Services provides education, project management, support and outsourcing services to simplify transitions.

HP is continuing to help customers move from competitors’ proprietary systems to industry-standard architectures. The second phase of HP’s Sun migration program offers qualified customers in the United States up to $50,000 in migration services to move from Sun Solaris systems to HP’s industry-standard platforms running HP-UX, Linux or Microsoft Windows®. The program provides trade-in offers for used Sun Solaris systems including a rebate of up to 15 percent to move to HP ProLiant servers or a credit of up to 20 percent towards the purchase of HP Integrity servers.

The program is designed to give customers access to a proof-of-concept system at no extra cost, as well as to the tools, services, multi-OS strategy and industry-standard hardware they need to run the applications that are most important to their business.

HP estimates it has generated $300 million worldwide in revenue through the Sun migration program and other initiatives from the time they were implemented in early 2003 – half of that generated in the United States. More information on this program is available at www.hp.com/go/eclipse.

The HP and SAP program for mySAP™ ERP (enterprise resource planning) is available worldwide to customers migrating to the mySAP ERP solution. HP and SAP provide customers with a complete package of services, expertise and financial incentives that will help ensure a simplified and economical path to mySAP ERP.
