The Planet, the global leader in IT hosting, today expanded its portfolio of products and services with the addition of Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V.  The new hypervisor-based technology will be available through the company’s Planet Alpha Dedicated Servers hosting division.

To increase flexibility, value and reliability, Hyper-V enables multiple operating systems to run on a single physical server as virtual machines.  Whether it’s Windows or Linux, servers operate in parallel on a single server.  Customers are able to consolidate their workloads across multiple underutilized servers on a small number of systems and to leverage their technology investments.

“We are beginning to see significant interest from our customers who are ready to take advantage of new virtualization technologies,” said Urvish Vashi, general manager of dedicated servers at The Planet.  “Many companies are looking to better utilize their server assets, which has long been the promise of virtualization.  As a Microsoft Gold-Certified Partner, we see Hyper-V as a new option that helps businesses better manage their IT infrastructures.”

Hyper-V joins The Planet’s existing virtualization portfolio, which includes Parallels Virtuozzo.

About Microsoft Hyper-V

For customers looking to move into a virtualization environment, Microsoft Hyper-V offers a rich feature set to maximize their technology investments:

Broad OS Support:  Customers gain broad support for simultaneously running multiple 32- and 64-bit operating systems across different server platforms, including Windows and Linux.

Network Load Balancing:  Hyper-V includes new virtual switch capabilities so virtual machines can be easily configured to run with Windows Network Load Balancing (NLB) Service, which spreads loads across virtual machines on different servers.

Quick Migration: Customers can rapidly migrate a running virtual machine from one physical host system to another with minimal downtime, to leverage high-availability Windows capabilities.

Virtual Machine Snapshot:  Hyper-V allows customers to take snapshots of a running virtual machine to easily revert to a previous state, and improve the overall backup and recoverability solution.

Scalability: With multi-processor support and improved memory access, customers can vertically scale their virtualization environments to support a large number of virtual machines.

High Availability:  Hyper-V includes support for clustering all virtual machines running on a host system.
