September 27, 2005 - Bedminster, N.J. – AT&T today announced that it is opening two additional Internet Data Centers (IDCs) in California and China, and augmenting its existing presence in the New York City center by 27 percent. With this added capacity, AT&T will be able to provide managed hosting services from 28 IDCs worldwide -- 14 within the U.S.; 14 outside of the U.S.
AT&T is bolstering its presence in the Silicon Valley/San Francisco Bay area with a new center in San Jose, Calif., which is scheduled to open in November. The center will more than double the company’s existing hosting capacity already available in that market. AT&T already has an IDC in Redwood City, Calif.
AT&T also announced its intention to offer hosting services in Shanghai, China. Service is expected to be available in November. AT&T already has an IDC in Hong Kong.
“We’re seeing tremendous demand for our hosting capabilities all over the world,” said Mike Jenner, vice president of AT&T Hosting and Application Management Services. “In addition to increasing our capacity and physical footprint, we’re focused on providing businesses value-added managed hosting services, such as pay-per-use capacity, enabling our customers to easily and affordably manage their applications and better serve their end-users.”
The new and expanded IDC’s in the U.S. will offer the full breadth of AT&T’s application performance management capabilities, for example, CRM or ERP management. The Shanghai IDC will offer the full suite of application performance management capabilities in early 2006.
This array of flexible hosting solutions enable customers to quickly and easily add security options and storage capacity, tap into AT&T’s intelligent content distribution service, and implement disaster recovery and load balancing options that can be integrated into their Virtual Private Network (VPN). AT&T’s Enterprise Hosting Services allow customers to choose the level of monitoring and management that best suits their business needs.
In addition to the IDC expansion, AT&T introduced today three enhancements to its market-leading Managed Hosting portfolio. These capabilities will help customers better manage their hosting infrastructure, including their server and operating systems and their applications; help customers more efficiently use their servers by allowing them to run multiple applications on a single machine; and offer customers the option to pay for hosting resources as they need them.
AT&T Server and Operating System Support (SOSS ) Service provides a collaborative, flexible solution that is designed for customers who want to retain control over their applications. The service tracks changes made to the customer’s environment (including restoring previous configurations), provides global support for hardware “break/fix;” keeps security patches up to date; and provides support for troubleshooting operating systems-related applications problems. The new service leverages AT&T’s investment in its integrated Global Enterprise Management System and the economies of scale using that system can provide them.
AT&T’s new server virtualization capability lets customers run multiple applications and multiple operating systems on a single server. This helps customers use their systems more efficiently and reduces their costs. The capability also allows customers to prioritize certain applications and adjust the way they are managed. This eliminates the need for customers to predict future use based on past experience – a constraint of more traditional hosting environments.
It also allows customers to make changes to servers in a “production” environment without scheduling the downtime that is often required. The capability also lets customers create virtual servers in minutes versus having to make physical changes that could take days.
Finally, AT&T’s Managed Utility Computing Pay-Per-Use offer helps customers match their IT investment with their business demands by letting them pay for hosting resources as they need them. This service, which uses Sun Microsystems, Inc., hardware, is especially attractive to customers whose businesses experience seasonal demands.
“AT&T recognized our need to deploy proprietary customer and partner data and applications; and to monitor and measure the usage of systems and performance in support of these deployments,” said Mike Tait, director of Internet Solutions at ESRI. “AT&T's managed utility computing capability enables us to confidently, effectively and efficiently outsource these systems for our customers.”
In her recent research flash entitled “AT&T Adds Heft to Hosting” (August 2005), Melanie Posey, IDC Research Director for Telecom Markets, assessed AT&T’s new capabilities. She said: “AT&T continues to expand its hosting server automation technologies, utility computing/virtual services, and remote management and monitoring capabilities. SOSS is an important addition to the hosting portfolio because it allows AT&T to further modularize its management services offerings and enables customers to outsource more selectively.
“The U.S. Internet Data Center expansions highlight growing demand from new and existing domestic and international customers,” Posey reported. “The new Internet data center in Shanghai clearly meets the needs of AT&T customers in that key region. The company is shrewdly implementing its strategy to position its hosting/data center services as part of a broader end-to-end solution that incorporates both global networking and infrastructure management.”
In addition to the introduction of new capabilities, the company announced that for customers concerned about regulations, such as Sarbanes-Oxley Act and HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) compliance , AT&T is planning to offer by year-end SAS 70 (Statement on Auditing Standards No. 70) Type 1 and 2 audits at all of its global IDCs. Previously, SAS 70 audits were available only in AT&T’s U.S. centers.
Underpinning all of these new capabilities is the AT&T BusinessDirect® web portal, which gives customers online access to tools that provide real-time reports on network performance and direct access to AT&T's ordering, status, inventory and trouble management systems. Hosting-specific tools provide users with the ability to track the business impacts of faults and changes, perform trend analysis and proactive capacity planning, and create reports according to their individual needs.
AT&T BusinessDirect has been recognized by the Yankee Group for providing customers with the strongest online support and service experience in the industry.
