Huge drop in spam after a single host is shut down

The global volume of junk e-mail went down by a double digit percentage on Tuesday, after web hosting company McColo Corp. was cut off from the internet. The company, located in Northern California, had been identified by security experts as a major host of spam operations.

Bounceback spam on the rise

Have you noticed an increase in the number of suspicious "undeliverable mail" messages in your inbox? If yes, you are not alone in this predicament, and no, your server has not been hacked. There are reports that the amount of the so-called bounceback spam, or backscatter, has been rising globally.

IT security company Sophos published the results of a new study, detailing the volume of spam and the distribution of its sources. Their research team monitored spam email and related websites for the first three months of 2008, using the company's global network of spam traps. The main findings: 92.3% of all email was spam and, in addition, they identified 3,300 new spam-related web pages every day, or one every three seconds.
