comScore and Nielsen now agree: Google is #1 in the US

Google overtook Yahoo as the most popular online destination in the USA, according to the latest statistics by comScore. 141 million Americans visited Google online properties in April, compared to 140.6 million visitors for Yahoo. The search engine giants are followed by Microsoft's network of websites, with 121.2 million visitors, and AOL, which attracted 111.2 million people.

comScore's data differs somewhat from the numbers released by Nielsen Research -- another web statistics provider. Nielsen showed that Yahoo dropped to the second place in the list of top web properties back in January, and has been behind Google in visitor numbers since. Yahoo, however, achieves better performance in keeping people longer on its pages.

Nielsen estimated that Google had an audience of 128.2 million in April, with 122.1 million for Microsoft and 117.1 million for Yahoo.

Google's rise to the number one spot has been caused by more people using its search and video sharing services. In April, Google shares rose 5.4% to $581.39.
