Sources are reporting that IBM is planning to acquire Sun, its rival in the computer server and software markets. According to the NYTimes, the price is nearly $7 billion. The merger will create a corporate entity, which owns some of the most recognizable software and hardware brands in the hosting and IT industries. If the deal happens, IBM will find itself in possession of the popular MySQL open source database, which Sun acquired in early 2008. Sun is also the creator of the Solaris operating system and the multiplatform Java programming language. Sun's business performance has been less than stellar over the past decade, but their technology portfolio remains strong. A potential merger will be made easier by the fact that the two company cultures are somewhat similar, being focused on long-term software and research projects. UPDATE April 6th 2009: The same source reports the deal is off.
