5. Back-up system
1&1 employs a sophisticated and complex system of hard drive and tape based equipment that backs up every administered Web site on a daily basis. Each of our 300 shared-webservers is equipped with a RAID-5 storage system. Additionally 1&1 has several high-performance HP L700E and Qualstar tape libraries located in a different data center.

All server data is continiously and automatically backed-up via a 10 GBit/sec line to the back-up systems with some 179 TB capacity. For root servers, to which 1&1 administrators don't have root access, there is an available back-up space of 20 GB each. This way server customers can comfortably back-up their systems themselves via FTP.
