Is Your Small Business Network At Risk?

2015-07-03by Adam Groff

Breaches and hacking threats are on every business's mind, which is why network security is becoming a top priority.

If your small business wants to stay ahead of the security curve, then it's time to adopt some new network protocol.

Here are just a few steps your business can take to protect its network:

Think Basic Security

Your small business's first line of defense against network risks is implementing basic security practices.

This includes installing and regularly updating a firewall for both wired and wireless access points.

Likewise, installing anti-malware software on all servers is also a must - don't rely on the limited protection that anti-virus software provides.

If your business handles or stores sensitive customer information, there are a number of extra security measures your small business must take.

The payment card industry (PCI) and government-mandated HiTech security rules spell out all the security steps your business should be taking, including encryption guidelines.

Limit Access

Although it's important for your employees to have access to business information, not all employees need the same level of access.

Tracking who has access to certain data and software can help your small business discover the source of threats and breaches if/when they take place.

Limiting access doesn't mean you don't trust your employees; it's just a safety measure and should be seen as such.

As the article, “Is there a way for your network to be 100% protected?” asks, not exactly. Limiting access by using two-step authentication and login tracking can certainly help.

Download All Updates Immediately

Just because a download isn't a security update doesn't mean your small business should take its time downloading. Considering a large majority of security breaches take place through outdated network software, regular updates should be a large part of your security efforts.

When software vendors release updates, they usually improve functionality, patch glitches, and correct potential security issues.

These all-inclusive updates sometimes don't fall under the "security update" umbrella. Because of this, it's important to download all updates as soon as they are available.

Don't Forget About Mobile Security

If your small business has a "bring your own device" policy in place, make sure your network security practices extend into the mobile realm.

Making sure tablets and smart phones are protected is tricky, especially when your employees are using their personal devices.

Your small business needs to make sure all mobile devices are configured to your network's security settings.

Likewise, installing anti-malware and other security software is a must.

And don't forget, if your employees are accessing business data on their mobile devices, they need to use encrypted logins just as they would with a network computer.

Educate Your Staff

When employees are educated on the network security process, it decreases the chance of threats and breaches. So, make sure your employees know the proper login and logout process.

Additionally, if your employees have individual software packages on their network computers, make sure they follow through with all updates or encourage them to install an auto-update program.

If you want to better protect your network, then keep the tips above in mind.
