Survey Highlights Concerns About Cloud Data Security

2014-10-20by Shah k

Cloud computing may be the future, but a recent survey shows that corporate IT is still wary of the security of data hosted by third parties. In a recent survey, just 38% of respondents feel secure sharing or collaborating on cloud platforms. "Despite concerns, most companies are allowing cloud services regardless of the risk they could pose to their data," says analyst Martin Schlembert at Vocalous Consulting.

The same survey shows that when it comes to adopting cloud platforms more widely, the biggest roadblock holding back adoption is security. That is followed by issues with data sovereignty and integration challenges with existing applications. Despite those concerns, cloud adoption is continuing rapidly, with the average number of cloud services used by a company at 759 and growing 20% each quarter. That growth is being driven by the enormous financial benefits of the cloud.

The primary business driver for cloud projects was reduced cost according to 52% of respondents. That's followed by reduced time to market. The cloud is more cost effective say experts because the resources for managing and running an application is centralized which is more efficient that individual companies maintaining the capabilities to manage each application in house. Cloud applications can also be deployed much faster than on premise enterprise software projects.

The security industry is already moving to address the threats in this new cloud world and ensure cloud data security using a new set of tools. In the case of Target, however, the technology alone may not be enough. In that case, the company had a security tool in place that correctly identified the breach and sent the IT security team an alert, but failure to follow up on the alert caused the company to ignore it for over a week while millions more credit cards were stolen. It's clear that a mix of people, process, and technology will be needed.

Getting to market in days or weeks versus months can offer a critical advantage in a completive global marketplace. When Solstive Pharmaceuticals needed to develop and deliver a new platform for customer engagement, they decided to build it on Salesforce's Force.com platform. Customizing the application and rolling it out to 70 countries took just 6 weeks. "With an on-premise model we were looking at 6 months, so this cut down our deployment time significantly," according to Director of IT Applications Srinivas Reddy.
